This last year was amazing in so many ways. I mean, I swam with manatees, met Rian Johnson, & got made over into a Jedi Master with my 🐕! But there were also a lot of personal challenges as well & curve balls thrown by the universe. This sounds like the case for many people- that 2018 was a long yet fast year. It’s also a good time to remember that IG is a curated experience & nothing makes that clearer than these best 9s. This snapshot captures some of the best of my year but not all, & it certainly doesn’t capture the low points. Full lives are a mix of everything.

In December, I finally finished 2 of my favorite fantasy series: V.E. Schwab’s epic Shades of Magic Trilogy & this quieter & more peculiar series, Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle. It’s hard for me to describe what makes the Raven Cycle so special; it’s hard to really explain the plot & to distill it down to saying it’s about a bunch of teens looking for an ancient Welsh King & magic forests doesn’t encompass the depth of the characters, the charm of the magic that’s both grand yet everyday, like you could stumble on it in your backyard. If you couldn’t guess, I loved the final book & am ok now with saying goodbye to this world for now. P.S. the audiobook is fantastic!

Shades of Magic & the Raven Cycle have 2 very different feels, but they were both captivating & transporting. And despite the farewells, I loved having both to close 2018 because they also gave me a sense of beginning again, of more adventures & dreams to come. To quote another fantasy series, Harry Potter: I open at the close.

No winter Star Wars film this year but it seems fitting I close out 2018 with it, especially since 2019 seems extra exciting for my favorite galaxy far, far away & we all remembered our General Carrie Fisher yesterday! Today’s also the last #SWRepMatters Twitter chat of the year & it’s simply about our feelings re: representation in Star Wars this year.

My thoughts, briefly: There were definitely great strides, especially with putting non-white men in leading LIVE-ACTION roles (SW animation has been way ahead re: diversity/rep), but I’d love to see more women of color given lead roles AND compelling stories (Thandie Newton’s Val was criminally underused in SOLO). I love Rey to the ends of the galaxy, but I’d also like if we moved away from white brunettes protagonists. There’s definitely room for more & it’s my dearest hope Rose Tico & Rey have some kind of friendship in Episode 9.

Recently I finished @veschwab’s A CONJURING OF LIGHT, the last book in the #adsom trilogy & this @jordandenenyc shirt is especially appropriate. “Anoshe” is the closest thing to Farewell in Arnesian, and this book is full of farewells - as can be expected for the 3rd in a trilogy. It’s been emotional.

Anoshe is also relevant to a bit of my December mood. This is a season of festivity and love, but it’s also a season of endings as the winter takes hold and the year closes. My grandpa passed in December on his birthday 10 years ago now & I hadn’t realized it had been that long already. With the fictional character losses I’ve been reading & some other things, I’ve been thinking about how grief is a subtle knife - how it can be there & gone, sudden & sharp until it’s not. I guess that’s how you know those you love are never really gone & to cherish the time you have now. Anoshe is for solace. May you all have that this holiday season. 💗
